Ruth Martin Gillette Brown Schrek, 96, of Elmhurst, Ill., died on June 6, 2016 at Park Place of Elmhurst.

Ruth was born on May 29, 1920 in Newbury, Mass., to Russell and Rachael Gillette. She was a 1939 graduate of Newburyport High School. She attended Westbrook Junior College in Portland, Maine and graduated from there in 1941. She also attended Boston Dispensary School of Medical Technology (later named New England Medical Center) and graduated from there in 1944.

She spent her professional career as a technician working in medical laboratories. She specialized in testing blood and blood products. She worked for several doctors and hospitals in New England during the late 1940’s. From 1952 until 1957, she was in charge of hematology work at the laboratory of the New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord. She worked in 1958 and 1959 at the blood bank of Lynn Union Hospital in Lynn, Mass. After moving to the Chicago area, she worked in blood testing from 1963 until 1965 at Community Memorial General Hospital in La Grange, Ill.

She concluded her professional career by working in leukemia research for the U.S. Veterans Administration from 1966 until her retirement in 1989. She did this work at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, Ill. During retirement, she also worked part time from 1994 until 1998 as manager of The Atrium condominiums in Elmhurst, Ill.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents; her infant twin sister, Anne; her first husband and the father of her children, Norman Anderson Brown; her infant son, Norman Anderson “Skipper” Brown II; her second husband, Dr. Robert Schrek; her sister, Elizabeth Adams Gillette; and her daughter, Mary Brown Leidner.

She is survived by her sister Suzanne Swenson of Raynham, Mass., her daughter Ann Morrison (Roger) of Menlo Park, Calif., daughter Carol Maniocha (Michael) of Glen Burnie, Md., and son Mark Brown (Kathy Kirman) of Aurora, Ill. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and her longtime friend, Joe Puma of Westchester, Ill.

Visitation will be held at the Pedersen Ryberg Mortuary, 435 N. York St., Elmhurst, IL, on Saturday June 11, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Service
